Q. Who do you think will be the star of the 2012 Paralympics?
A. Kurt Fearnley is the world wheelchair marathon champion. He won the marathon in Athens on a flat tyre, won again in Beijing, is a lovely bloke, and the ladies love him. He also crawled the Kokoda Trail a few years back, and was on the winning Sydney to Hobart yacht this year. Seriously, he makes Usain Bolt look like a pussy.
Q. Which event – or which athlete – are you most looking forward to watching and why?
A. Last Paralympics I fell in love with wheelchair basketball. In particular an Aussie girl called Kylie Gauci. I watched her wheel down the court at breakneck speed, and complete a flick pass behind her back, and the back of the wheelchair, that lead to a three-pointer. If I can see her do that at least once this year I will be a happy man.
Q. Which of the ParalympicsGB team do you think will surprise us?
A. Nothing about the ParalympicsGB team will surprise me. They were so clearly focused on winning in Beijing, but also on making sure they are at the top of their games when it comes to London. The public may end up surprised by just how well the British team do, but I am bracing myself for it.
Q. What aspect of covering the Paralympics are you most excited about?
A. I am most excited about getting to meet some amazing athletes and hearing their stories. For me, the joy of the Paralympics is that everyone has a story, a life outside sport that has led them to where they are now. I remember in Beijing, a lot of people told me they thought there was a lot more heart and soul at the Paralympics than at the Olympics. I am looking forward to experiencing that again.
Q. What is your biggest fear about the Games?
A. My biggest fear about the Games is that the ParalympicsGB Team will win more medals than the Aussie team. As an Aussie in Britain I will never hear the end of it.
Q. The GB team won 42 golds last time, how many will they get at London 2012?
A. I know the GB team want to do their level best at their home Games. And why not? If you invite people to your house for a party, you don't wanna be the first one to go to bed. I have a sneaky feeling they will crack the half century these Games. And maybe even make it to 60.
