Cyclists with visual impairments ride tandems, using sighted pilots to steer their bike around the track. Former Olympic medallist Craig McLean is piloting Anthony Kappes for Britain in London.
Red, blue, green and white protective helmets are worn to distinguish each competitor's level of disability. Any athlete found wearing the wrong colour helmet can be expelled from competition.
Partially sighted GB track cyclist Anthony Kappes landed two gold medals and broke a world record in 2008 while secretly riding with a broken shoulder he sustained in training just 10 days before the event.
Around 150 athletes will race over distances ranging from 500m to 4,000m, as individuals or in team events. A total of 20 gold medals will be up for grabs.
GB riders dominated proceedings at the 2008 Games in Beijing, winning 17 gold medals.
