How it works: (Road) cycling

Road races and time trials test cyclists of all disabilities to the limit. Bicycles, tricycles, tandems and hand cycles are all featured in the same races with the medals dished out for the best in each category. It's complicated but a whole lot of fun to watch.

What you need to know

  • number_1

Cycling is not an adapted event - athletes compete with the same rules and conditions as their able-bodied counterparts at the Olympic Games.

  • number_2

The event began in the early 1980s for athletes with visual impairments competing on a tandem with a sighted pilot, but by 1984 athletes of other disabilities were invited to join the party.

  • number_3

Men and women compete against one another in the mixed time trial and road race - it was British male David Stone who took the spoils in both events in Beijing.

  • number_4

Handcycling was introduced at the Athens Games in 2004 and is now one of the fastest growing sports around. The newly formed British Grand Prix features a series of handcycle races around the UK.

  • number_5

The road race is 239km for men and 120km for women. Competitors start together and the first over the finish line is the winner. Time trial riders start 90 seconds apart and sprint against the clock to post the fastest time.

What to say: (Road) cycling

"Show me a little attack and hook manoeuvre." Following a sprint the cyclist suddenly moves the back wheel to the side, forcing the rider behind to slow down to avoid running into it.

Who's good: (Road) cycling

When it comes to road cycling, Great Britain is a force to be reckoned with. With golds in both the men's and women's events in Beijing, the British dominate the event.
