Shooters aim from a distance of 10, 25 or 50m in either a standing, kneeling or prone position. Points are won by hitting the target - 10 concentric rings, the key one being the bull's-eye.

What you need to know

  • number_1

Shooting was introduced at the Paralympic Games Toronto 1976 and since then Great Britain has been on the silverware hunt, hoovering up medals at every single event where it has featured.

  • number_2

The rather grand 18th-century Royal Artillery Barracks in Woolwich, southeast London - the former home of the Royal Artillery - is the setting for the Paralympic Games London 2012 shooting event, alongside Olympic shooting and Paralympic archery.

  • number_3

Paralympic shooting is open to athletes with any kind of disability. There are different types of firearm: rifle, air rifle, pistol and air pistol. The competitors are divided into men's, women's and mixed categories.

  • number_4

Before her death in 2007, shooting marvel Isabel Newstead was one of Great Britain's most successful ever Paralympic competitors, winning a ridiculous nine gold medals in three disciplines over seven games. She was also the reigning World and European Champion.

  • number_5

Shooting has come a long way since the Olympic Games Paris 1900. Then, live pigeons were the target and Australian competitor Donald Mackintosh won gold by blasting 22 of the poor creatures. Happily, live animals haven't been used since.

What to say: Shooting

"Fire the small-bore!" might sound more like something you'd shout whilst watchingThe Apprentice, but a "small-bore" refers to the .22 rifles used in the shooting event.

Who's good: Shooting

Historically Great Britain are pretty decent at hitting the target. The South Koreans are none too shabby either, racking up nine medals at Beijing, with Sweden arguably the strongest in Europe, cleaning up four.
