How it works: Swimming

Competitors are classified according to the type and extent of their disability, and race against their peers. Heats of eight competitors are whittled down until the winners of each round meet in the final to race for the gold medal.

What to say: Swimming

"I love your black goggles!" Partially sighted swimmers wear them when they race against athletes who are blind.

Who's good: Swimming

The United States have an excellent track record, taking home a grand total of 44 medals from Beijing 2008 - 17 of which were gold. China also excel but Great Britain are hot on their heels and, at the last Games, managed an impressive haul of 41 swimming medals, ranking fourth on the table.
